Scandonia’s new government finalised | PBC News 24 Politics Blog

Three of Scandonia's centre-right political parties have finalised their coalition agreement, moving one step closing to forming a government in the wake of a landslide victory in last month's election.

The country's prime minister-in-waiting, Ferdinand Brouwer, was all smiles Monday afternoon, appearing in a press conference to announce that he would meet King Christian III tomorrow.

"Tuesday, I visit with His Majesty, and I ask him for the privilege of forming a government in his name and for him to seat the newly elected members of the Nationale Kamer," Mr Brouwer said. "This is a proud moment of accomplishment for me and for my partners in this coalition. We look forward to putting this country on a path to recovery as soon as we enter office."

Should the King grant Mr Brouwer the right to form a new government — largely a formality under Scandonia's system of constitutional monarchy — it is expected that his administration will take power one week from today.

Draco van Daven, spokesman for Mr Brouwer, told PBC News Monday that the formateur has tapped loyal right-hand man Thomas Bos to lead the controversial Fiscal Compliance Office, a new ministry-level department charged with overseeing economic and social reforms, eliminating the government's sizeable deficit and downsizing the public sector.

The coalition agreement gives several key portfolios — namely labour, internal affairs, transport and infrastructure, and justice — to the Christian Democracy and Reform party, who is the junior partner in what is being called a "two-and-a-half party" coalition arrangement. Accomplished lawyer and rookie MP Hanna Steenbergen will take charge of the justice ministry.

Scandonia's Future, the third and most centrist party in the coalition, has taken two of the government's "social ministries" — Education will be held by party leader Hendrika de Koning, while deputy party leader Simon Bommel will lead the Ministry of Social Affairs.

The rest of the ministries will be run by the Moderate Party.

Inside sources claim Action française leader Michel Auge has refused the coalition's offer for a seat at the cabinet table as a representative of the French Community and a minister without portfolio, but this has not been confirmed.

The incredibly slim cabinet — compare the list below to the 57-member government of former prime minister Theo van Kaap — will, barring any last minute changes, look like this:

Prime Minister: Ferdinand Brouwer (Moderate Party) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour: Marius ten Roden (Christian Democracy and Reform) Minister of Finance: Mirjam Veenstra (Moderate Party) Minister of Fiscal Compliance: Thomas Bos (Moderate Party) Minister of External Affairs: Anika van den Berg (Moderate Party) Minister of Internal Affairs: Benjamin Verhagen (Christian Democracy and Reform) Minister of Defence: Nicolaas Lammers (Moderate Party) Minister of Justice and Advocate-General: Hanna Steenbergen (Christian Democracy and Reform) Minister of Economic Affairs: Marnix Schipper (Moderate Party) Minister of Social Affairs: Simon Bommel (Scandonia's Future) Minister of Public Health: Sebastiaan Post (Moderate Party) Minister of Education: Hendrika de Koning (Scandonia's Future) Minister of Housing, Planning and the Environment: Inge Pleinfors (Moderate Party) Minister of Transports and Infrastructure: Teun Lappert (Christian Democracy and Reform)
