Playworks and school recess | PUBPOL 587-003

Playworks, a nonprofit that helps organize safe, productive, and active recess activities for elementary schools.  This short commentary about the organization from David Bornstein chronicles how recess and lunch are being cut in elementary schools so more time can be spent on math and science instruction.  It also mentions that principals generally find recess a logistical nightmare anyway.  Playworks "coaches" facilitate recess activities at their member schools, providing supervision and organization so kids can "learn how to play" at recess.  This organization adds another layer to our discussion of nonprofit-public partnerships earlier this semester.

A part of me (remembering my own COMPLETELY unstructured recess days) reads this and says, "Go away Playworks! Just let the kids play!"  But the results cited in the article indicate hard-t0-ignore results.  I was completely unfamiliar with the organization and perused their website here, and they actually are up and running in 16 areas across the country, including Detroit.
