1. Dear Scott, you published and released an artist album via the music blog Infinite State Machine last Christmas - available for free download. What induced you to do that?

I thought giving it away as a gift would be nice to do, especially so my friends and supporters could have easy access to it. After all I really make music because I enjoy it and so that hopefully others will find joy in it as well.


2. Did you ever consider to promote and distribute your music this way?

I think the whole download thing is a great way to give away music. I haven't really got that involved in selling my music digitally, really only on Juno Download. (name drop, BAM!)


3. What were people's reactions on your artist album?

Hopefully good. ;-)


4. What is the concept behind "For All Days, My Blood, My Brothers"? As we take a short glance at the tracklist, we can see a dedication and tribute to many artists...

Each track is dedicated to one of my friends (male; hence 'brothers') who have heavily supported myself and my music. The track that I dedicated to them should hopefully say something about their personality and/or our relationship. Its really an album that is dedicated to their kindness.


5. There's always a face behind an artwork. So let's talk a little bit about yourself. What is your musical background?

I don't have much of a musical background, I can play the drums some, deejay halfway decent, and have a good enough ear to produce some very minimal music. Mainly I just dig music that makes me feel united with other humans or like sitting in a dingy dive bar drinking Scotch.


6. When and what was your initial spark in respect of house music?

Starting in 1994 I attended some raves in Detroit and across the border in Canada but it wasn't until I witnessed Kenny Dixon Jr. & Theo Parrish play at a Hot Box Party that I really became fixated. Then I found out about a shitload more of Detroit, Chicago, and New York house producers. 99.9% of my house & techno record collection comes from these 3 cities. The other .1% is on F Comm. ;-)


7. How much time passed until you got your first turntables and spun your first records?

I started buying records in 1995, the same year I saw KDJ & Theo and by 1996 I had purchased 2 Technic 1210's and a small Gemini DJ Mixer.


8. You also produce your own music and your records are - let me say it like this - characterized by high emotional content. What were and what are your most important influences?

Black Americans. For me almost all of the music I listen to would not exist if not for Black Americans.


9. Your releases mostly come out on your own imprint, Ferrispark Records. What did you push to found your own label?

I'll sum it up fast...

saw KDJ & Theo
bought records
bought turntables
left Michigan for 1.5 years to work 3 jobs, save money, buy records, practice deejaying, buy ASR-10, learn ASR-10.
returned to Detroit (actually Highland Park)
founded Ferrispark
completed 3 tracks
pressed at Archer
found distribution
kept on making records


10. How difficult, or how easy is it to stand your ground?

For me rather easy because I'm just going to keep doing what I do. I think if you listen to my first record or my last record you'll hear its still really the same thing. Me expressing how I feel in the universal language of music. HOLLAH!


11. What are your future plans?

God only knows playah, I just take it one day at a time. SOLID!
