Keep Schtum - Keep It Deep Guest Mix

Sonntag, 31. Oktober 2010. Vorabend von Allerheiligen. All Hallows' Even. Halloween. Wie kaum einen anderen "Trend" haben sich diesen die Diskothekenbesitzer und Partyveranstalter gerade in etwas ländlicheren Gegenden zu Eigen gemacht, um kräftig Kasse zu machen. Da ab Sonnenuntergang sowieso schon alle randvoll getankt sind, spielt auch keine Rolle mehr, was man ihnen musikalisch, an "Deko" und "Specials" vorsetzt, vorausgesetzt, der Techno ist ist minimal (oder vielmehr m_n_ml), der House ist voll von afro-kubanischen Conga- und Bongo-Elementen, es gibt wenigstens einen R'n'B- und Elektro-Floor, und Shots kosten nicht vielmehr als fünfzig Cent. Da klinke ich mich gerne aus, verbringe den Abend entweder alleine hinter einem Bücherstapel oder gemeinsam mit Freunden, einem kühlen Bier oder wohltemperierten Wein. Nennt mich ruhig Langweiler oder Spiesser. In der Nacht vom 31. Oktober auf den 01. November bin ich das sehr gerne.

Wer ähnlich denkt und fühlt, wer sich heute ebenfalls zurückzieht, alleine oder mit Freunden, auf handverlesene Musik irgendwo zwischen House und Disco nicht verzichten möchte, sei der heutige Guest Mix umso mehr ans Herz gelegt. Zusammengestellt, eingespielt und aufgenommen hat ihn der Ire Michael McKenna. Auf PowerFM hat er seine eigene Radio Show, und Edit-Jägern sowie Goldgräbern gleichermassen dürfte sein Künstleralias Keep Schtum nicht ganz unbekannt sein. Auf ihn gestossen bin ich vor nun doch mehr als zwei Jahren, und zwar das Blog Soul Industries, auf welchem der Freiburger und nun Wahl-Züricher Shaddy hin und wieder seine Fundstücke präsentiert hat. Mehr über Michael "Keep Schtum" McKenna erfahrt ihr im folgenden von ihm selbst:


1. Dear Michael, would you like to introduce yourself?

My name is Michael McKenna from 'Keep Schtum'. I am a DJ, Producer and Promoter from Dublin in Ireland. You can see what I'm up to at www.facebook.com/michaelkeepschtum.


2. When did your initial music spark ignite?

In the mid 80's, when I was in my early/mid teens I started getting into 60's and 70's rock like Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Aeroplane. This quickly progressed into indie guitar music like The Stone Roses and The Charlatans, then onto the Happy Mondays and next Acid House. Within the next few years I had bought a set of Decks.


3. Who and what is your most important influence?

That's a difficult one. No one individual person or thing has had a large influence on me musically. However there was a 'Mixmag' mix-tape by Kevin Saunderson released in 1992 that definitely pushed me towards wanting to become a DJ. I probably have most of the tunes from that mix on vinyl now and still occasionally play one or two of them.


4. How would you describe your own style?

Again, hard to say. It really depends where I play. I suppose you could say anything I play generally falls under the headings of Balearic, Soul, Disco or House, but I occasionally play other stuff too.


5. Do you produce your own tracks and what are you currently working on?

Yes I do. I did a few original productions a few years ago and some disco re-edits slightly more recently. You can check a few of them out at Michael Keep Schtum. Two of the disco re-edits are available for free download and the other 3 are for sale on vinyl at www.juno.co.uk.

Currently, after a long break from production, I have just started 2 new re-edits that should be done pretty quickly and I am sifting through some old files of partly completed songs that I salvaged from an old computer of mine. A while back I actually lost every thing I had worked on over the previous few years when my external hard drive died at the same time as I was reformatting my laptop. I now back up everything 3 times after that nightmare.


6. What are your future plans?

More re-edits, more original productions and to continue with the radio show on Powerfm.org. I'm also warming up for Moodymann when he plays in Dublin at the end of October, which I'm looking forward to and I'm going to start making an effort to get more gigs outside of Ireland.
