Ziva Rodann: rape, murder and vengeance

Opening sequence of Last Train from Gun Hill in which Catherine Morgan (Ziva Rodann), a young woman of Indian origin, is waylaid in the forest by two sadistic thugs, one of which rips off her clothes and proceeds to rape and kill her (off screen). The scene prefigures the more violent Eurowesterns of the 1960s, where a similar rape/murder often leads to bloody vengeance. Here, the revenge is exacted by the woman's husband, Marshal Matt Morgan, all within the confines of the law. Of course, in the later Eurowesterns, the rape/murder would have been witnessed by the woman's 9-year old son, who in "Last Train" instead manages to escape into town before the violence erupts. As a recurring Eurowestern theme, the young boy would grow into a far more ambiguous protagonist, hell-bent on revenge.

The appearance of Ziva Rodann (Ziva Shapir) here is of added interest for the genre buff as she also appears as the lovely Simira in "Pharaoh's Curse" (1957) and as Venus de Viasa in "Macumba Love" (1960), along with being featured in Roger Corman's "Teenage Doll" (1957), "College Confidential" and in the Italian "I Gigante della Tessaglia" (both 1960).

Rodann appeared nude in the September 1958 issue of Scamp (The Sparkling Companion for Men). Her measurements at the time were: 35-22-35,5. The same issue featured gorgeous genre fav Debra Paget on the cover and inside, along with Greta Thyssen ("Terror is a Man" - "Journey to the Seventh Planet"), Diana Dors and Elsa Martinelli among others.
