Before the release of Generation IV, Pokemon had two spin offs of the main series. Pokemon Ranger and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue Rescue Team took Pokemon to a completely different level. Several years later after the success of the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, the sequels Explorers of Time/Darkness were released. The twist to the Mystery Dungeon series is that instead of catching and training Pokemon, you actually ARE the Pokemon. When you start a new game, you have to complete a personality test, which determines what nature you are according to gender. Then you have to select your partner which accompanies you throughout the game and after game.
At first, I was very skeptical of this idea. I did not like the thought of being stuck as one Pokemon throughout the entire game. However, when I actually started the game, I didn't have time to think about what Pokemon I was. I believe that this game probably has more of a concrete storyline than the main series. It's completely different, since there are no humans whatsoever, and sometimes to progress the story you have to do tedious rescue missions. The only thing that I'm not too fond about is that you cannot evolve at all until the post game is over.
